Tribal Broadband Bootcamps Announced for 2023

The Tribal Broadband Bootcamps, which have worked with 20 Tribes and more than 100 participants over the past 2 years, offering hands-on training in wireless and fiber-optic networks, will continue in 2023 with an expanded schedule and expanded curriculum.
Tribal Broadband Bootcamps are planned by Matt Rantanen and our own Christopher Mitchell as part of the Indigenous Connectivity Institute at Connect Humanity.
Additional events will be announced in coming months, but the first event will be hosted by Gila River in January.
Hoopa Valley will be hosting one in May. Additional events are planned in March and June and will continue over the course of the year. More information on the bootcamps can be found in this two page pdf explainer.

Tribal Broadband Bootcamp Advances: Underground and Above
IT-minded Tribal leaders and instructors gather in southern California for the 11th Tribal Broadband Bootcamp as the three-day intensive learning experience continues to offer the ultimate Indian Country networking experience. All of the previous TBB’s offered hands-on training, but this particular bootcamp took it up a notch as TBB instructors set up a full deployment demonstration, illustrating how fiber is buried and/or deployed aerially.
Los Alamos County, New Mexico Issues RFP For Community Fiber Network
Los Alamos County, New Mexico joins the growing list of municipalities looking to explore a community-owned broadband network in a bid to improve resident access to fast, affordable, next-generation fiber. An updated RFP was issued in December giving potential partners until January 12 to respond.

BEAD’s Match Exemption for High-Cost Areas May Be Challenging for Tribal ISPs
With limited capital for high-speed Internet service on Tribal lands, exacerbated by a vast “missing middle mile,” federal broadband funding will have to be used strategically and collaboratively with Tribes to solve the connectivity challenges across Indian Country. The “high-cost area” match exemption could be an important tool to facilitate sustainable infrastructure deployment on Tribal lands, but it is not yet clear that states will make this exemption feasible.
